COST BENEFIT OF HIRING A REMOTE PARALEGAL

Salary is only one of the factors a law firm must consider when hiring in-house support staff.

There are many direct and indirect costs involved in hiring staff.  A firm needs to assess their needs both short term and long term when considering a new hire.

According to a recent report by the Society for Human Resource Management, employers spend an average of $4,129.00 and about 42 days to fill an open position.  Once the position is filled, there will be employee training and equipment costs which average, for a small firm, about $1095.00 per new hire.

Once an employee is actively working, there will be the additional firm costs of payroll deductions, holiday time, sick time and unproductive time.

In Canada, in 2019, the average total contribution by an employer to an employee’s CPP premiums, employment insurance premiums, workers’ compensation, benefits and cost of holiday time was about $4200 per year, per employee.

checklist, check, think about

With a Freelance paralegal you pay one easy flat hourly rate.  90% of the time, that time can be ethically billed directly to your client.  There is NO unproductive time.  You pay only for the work you contract the Paralegal to do. Application drafting, financial statements, client liaising, month end billing, consultation set up are services that a Freelance paralegal can deliver directly to you.

With an experienced Freelance paralegal you can deliver the same quality of service to your clients without the restraints and cost of a traditional office.  Often a Freelance paralegal has flexible hours and can conference call with a client in the evening or prepare a Trial Brief on a Sunday.

A recent McKinsey consumer survey showed 41% of workers in the study reported higher productivity working remotely.  Without the interruptions or distractions of a traditional law firm, a Freelance paralegal is more efficient and productive.

A Freelance paralegal can help you bridge a gap in your firm’s support needs.  You may need support for a short or extended period of time. Maybe you need holiday support.  A Freelancer is an affordable way to fill a staffing need exactly when you need it!

  1. That sounds interesting. Is that something you can do at home when you finish school and are in the job market? Terri Lazare Wulfe

    1. Hello erotik, Thank you for taking the time to respond to my blog. My answer to your question is that the legal field is an exciting and satisfying line of work. But it takes time working with experienced professionals to gain the knowledge and confidence to work remotely. So jumping from school to working remotely would be a very daunting undertaking. I recommend gaining experience by working in a law office or in the court system before considering remote work. I hope this answers your question.
